Bishop J. Derrick Johnson, a native of Washington, DC, is the senior pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Church which is a growing multi-cultural church in the city of Columbus, OH. Before coming to Columbus, he assisted his father and pastor in ministry for 13 years in Washington, DC. In 2003, he succeeded the presiding bishop of the United Holy Church of America as pastor of Gospel Tabernacle.
Community
With a vision of "Transforming Hearts, Families and Communities," he has led the church in establishing several new ministries. With a vision for the surrounding community, he also became C.E.O. of Transformation Corporation, Inc. in 2008. Through this community development corporation, Gospel Tabernacle strives to "Transform the Community with Care." In January of 2013 he led Gospel Tabernacle in acquiring 7 lots and a building which they renovated. This building is now called "Hildreth House" which houses their food pantry and clothing distribution center.
Bishop Johnson is a fourth-generation pastor with over 33 years of ministry experience. In 2014 he published his first book which is an outgrowth of his doctoral dissertation on transitional leadership. Recognized for his academic excellence, he also served as a doctoral mentor for the Doctor of Ministry program at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. Active in his local district, he previously served on the Board of Presbytery, as 2nd Vice President of the Northwestern District, as 1st Assistant to the Bishop, and as Vice President of the district. He was consecrated to the office of Bishop in May of 2014 and was elected as Presiding Bishop of the Northwestern District in July of 2016. In October of 2016 he was elected to the General Board of Bishops.
Bishop Johnson is recognized as a dynamic preacher and teacher. Not limited by denominational boundaries, he has ministered in churches across the denominational spectrum including various conferences and the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN). He holds a B.S. degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Master of Divinity degree from the Howard University School of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary. He shares his life and ministry with his wife, Elect Lady Sabrina Johnson, and they are the proud parents of Brianna Elaine and James Derrick, II.
